Week 11 of Ironman training

November 28, 2015 by Amy Riley 1 Comment

This was a BIG week in the pool!! And…on the bike!

Sunday – Swim session. 36 minutes, all bilateral. Wore my new swim cap. That helps a little! There’s just a little less going on around your goggles and face. = half hour

Monday – Didn’t run in the morning like I’d planned. Ugh! A pattern is emerging. I haven’t felt like doing my planned Monday workouts for 2 weeks.

How can I feel more rejuvenated? Feel refueled? Currently, I think it’s more of a work-related energy issue. When I have a full work calendar, I do a good job of setting my expectations appropriately, knowing that non-priority items such as email will build up throughout the busy week. However, then I assume the next week that I’ll have ALL this time to catch up. This doesn’t set me up with a useful mentality. The next set of priorities are bubbling up and I’ve still got the non-priority stuff from the previous week to do. I see the new lengthy To Do list and I get discouraged.

To address this, I don’t think there’s much to “do” differently. Sure, going to bed a little earlier always helps. Yet, I think this is more of a perspective shift. There is downtime and rejuvenating activities on the weekends. I can shift more to fully see them as such. I can also change how I relate to that long Action Item list on Sunday night or Monday morning. Instead of thinking, “Oh Geez! This list still way too long!,” I could tell myself something more along the lines of, “Look at how lucky you are to have a thriving business and plenty to do!”

I’m excited to play with this and change my perspective on my workload from week to week. Seems like this will be an excellent time to shift this before training volume gets heavier and heavier!

Monday night I did the Athlete Zone class at the gym = 1 hour

Tuesday – Did a swim session in the morning. 37 minutes (it’s all bilateral from here on out – I won’t write it anymore!) Then, I did a 2.5 hour bike ride. I forgot to wear my watch. I mapped out the ride afterwards, looks to have been about 33 miles. It was windy on the way back! I was struggling at times to keep my cadence going. Felt some aches in my right knee. = 3 hours

Wednesday – In the afternoon I had a swim lesson. I showed up about 5 minutes early and swam for about 20 minutes afterwards. Given that we talk quite a bit during the lesson, I’ll say this was about a half hour of work.

We had a breakthrough on the kick!! My swim instructor, Kirsten, was seeing my hips rock too much when I kicked. We figured out that I needed to arch my back a little, which shifted me in the water to be able to engage my core more and move my hips/butt less. Kirsten got so excited when I showed her. “Your kick is actually powering you! You sped up! You are no longer just dragging your legs along!,” she exclaimed. Awesome. This sounds really good.

My next things to focus on in the pool are:

  1. Arching back and focusing on kick
  2. Doing a little more “catch up” with my arms, keep that lead arm out there straight a little longer on each stroke
  3. Not resting at all on one end of the pool, going down and back before taking a rest, then Kirsten wants this rest to be no more than 15 seconds… whew, that sounds hard 🙂

= half hour

Thursday – Happy Thanksgiving!! And, Happy Birthday to my daughter, McKenzie! Did a Cardio Kickboxing class. = 1 hour

Friday – Went off with McKenzie in the morning for a 3 to 4 mile run. She wasn’t feeling it. We ran most of a first mile, then we walked most of the rest, logging 2.4 miles. We walked along holding hands and talking. It was also cold and wet out, but we were appropriately dressed and enjoyed our time together. I think she and I shouldn’t keep thinking that we’ll top out her mileage. I’m going to suggest that our next runs be 1.5 to 2 miles. Then, if she’s feeling it some day we can just spontaneously go longer.

Then, I went back out on my own to run 5 miles. = 1 hour

Saturday – Cycling class. Lots of sprinting in the first half. Mostly hills in the second half. Wore my tri suit and then immediately went down to the pool in the tri suit to swim. With my new kick position, better “catch ups,” and no – to very little (no more than 5 seconds) – rest on one end of the pool, I did this workout in 33.5 minutes!! I’ve never gotten it under 36 minutes before!! Hoorah! This feels terrific. I was NO where near keeping my rest on the one side of the pool to 15 seconds, but obviously I sped this whole thing up. I’m thinking a little faster swimming and a little less overall rest. SO jazzed!! Notable progress in the pool. Right now, nothing makes me happier!

Didn’t feel my right knee today. I feel like a sore or tight shin muscle might have been a contributor. I’ve massaged it in recent days. I think this has made a difference. Figuring out my swim kick position might’ve helped too.

Also went to “Play it Again Sports,” bit the bullet, and bought myself a bike trainer. This used sports goods store had a fluid trainer for $80. I’m jazzed about that deal. (If you don’t think it’s a good deal – don’t tell me!) Now I gotta find a place to get it set up downstairs and get it set up. Seems like each completed action item generates more!! 🙂 = 1. 5 hours

TOTAL = 8.5 hours, great week for swimming and cycling!

  • Swim = 2 hours
  • Bike = 3.5 hours
  • Run = 1 hour
  • Strength = 2 hours

The next shifts to my nutrition

November 24, 2015 by Amy Riley 2 Comments

shrimpSo after learning more about metabolic efficiency, I’m interested in finding more high protein, low carb foods to snack on.

Here’s my “bottom line” understanding of metabolic efficiency (after attending one presentation on it…so I’m credible expert! not…):

  • Endurance athletes want to teach their bodies to burn fat.
  • When we exercise, most people, start off burning fat and then at some point switch to carbohydrates.
  • You can only replace so many carbohydrates during exercise (I think the number I heard was 30% – you can only replace per hour 30% of what you’re consuming).
  • You stop burning fat, you start burning carbohydrates and you can only replace so much. At some point you get to the WALL.
  • If you can teach your body to burn fat, then you can push out this wall.

I’m interested in this.

I walked away from the presentation with one simple understanding of how to do this. Work to have a 1:1 ratio between protein and carbohydrates. It seems challenging.

I don’t pay much attention to grams of protein, carbs, sugars, fibers, etc. I don’t pay much attention to calories. I’ve been a “just keep it in moderation” kind of gal. Although I do consider “popcorn/chips and salsa” to be a food group. That doesn’t seem to bode well.

I’m on a mission to learn more. Yet, I also want to keep it simple. I’ve started out by googling high protein foods. Okay, here’s what I’m willing to snack on more…

  • Eggs! hard boil those up, that’s easy and portable
  • Greek yogurt, already on top of it!
  • 2% milk? wow, that would seem wrong. Could I try it? Soy milk? I can try that.
  • Chicken, yup, eat that a lot.
  • Tuna, okay, I could eat more of that.
  • Ground beef, 95% lean. I could add that in.
  • Dried lentils. Hmmm, this seems worth a try. They are high in fiber too.
  • Canadian bacon. okay! that would be easy to add a slice to my Tupperware container of veggies and almonds that I take with me some days.
  • Peanut butter, already on it. But, I’m thinking the kind I eat is probably too processed.
  • Almond butter, just added this in to balance out fruits. Love it with apple.
  • Edamame. I have a bag of these at home, I want to work these in.
  • Peas. Not terribly high in protein, but also have fiber. Okay, I like peas!
  • Quinoa. Have added some of this in, just got to keep going.
  • Brussels sprouts, broccoli – already on it. (Okay, I’m going to admit it. I never knew that “brussels” was plural. I thought it was brussel sprouts. Huh.)
  • Shrimp. I’m not a big fish-at-home gal. I’ll order it out all the time…but that’s when it’s probably covered with rich sauces and such. Yet, shrimp, I could do that. (And tuna).

Alright!

I’m going to 1) share this list with the hubby (who does the grocery shopping. Yes, he is awesome), and 2) start incorporating more of these foods into the “to go” containers of snacks I create for myself when I have fully on the go days.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

How have you made nutritional shifts that have “stuck” and really worked for you? I’d love to hear what’s working for others.

Why running is better than swimming

November 22, 2015 by Amy Riley 2 Comments

happy runnerI’m a runner. I thought going into this endeavor that I’d want to stop saying that and start saying that I’m a triathlete. But you know what? I’m a runner, and I think it’s going to be great to embrace that throughout this process.

And, I actually am enjoying swimming more than I thought I would. Although swimming is currently the only one of the sports capable of sending me on a roller coaster of an emotional journey in just one single workout session. 🙂

So…I thought I’d put together this list! Why running is better than swimming!

And…in all fairness, I will soon create a “Why swimming is better than running” list. I promise, swimmers, I’ll write it. I may even already know a thing or 2 I can put on it. But first…

Running is better than swimming because…

  • I can zone out, think about things, brainstorm, work through problems on a run – while swimming I can’t even think about what all the pieces of my body are supposed to be doing all at the same time!
  • You can get somewhere – you can run to a destination (Okay, maybe I’ll be able to do that when I get to open water swims, but right now it’s just back and forth…)
  • You don’t get translucent fingernails that peel apart
  • When running, you can breathe whenever, however you want
  • There are more clothing options for a runner, more of a chance of looking cute
  • You can wear your running clothes around about town
  • You can run with others and chat, reach out and touch them, really be together
  • And…immediately go to Starbucks afterwards!
  • You can pick different running routes all the time
  • You can take in beautiful surroundings
  • You can work up a visible, smelly sweat!
  • You have the option of listening to music while running
  • You’re supposed to shower before getting in the pool…

What else running friends? What makes running your sport of choice??

I’m so tired… 10 weeks in

November 21, 2015 by Amy Riley Leave a Comment

tiredIt was a busy work week for me. I was facilitating something and sometimes multiple things every day this week. Add in 3 swim sessions (which tire me out) and other workouts and I was completely bushed by Friday and WAY tired (can you say 3 hour nap??!) by Saturday. I was also mentally tired at the beginning of the week. Couldn’t seem to get started and going with the workouts.

Oh, and it was a bad week for cycling. Didn’t do any!

Sunday – Swim session. 36 minutes, all bilateral. Feeling good about that. Hope I can keep it up for the other 2 swim sessions this week. = half hour

Monday – off. Wasn’t supposed to be off. I had planned to run in the morning, but skipped that. Had planned to do a cycling class at 5:30pm, yet didn’t get myself up and out of the house in the rain. I just wanted to stay home and have a full night with the family. Struggling mentally.

Tuesday – Ran 5 miles in the morning. The run felt great! Swim session. Again finished the workout in 36 minutes and kept it all bilateral! Pretty jazzed about that! = 1.5 hours

Wednesday – In the evening did Project Bootcamp at the gym. = 1 hour

Thursday – Swim session, finished in 37 minutes, all bilateral. Then did strength on my own. = 1.25 hours

Friday – Off. Full day of facilitation, after many other full work days. I was feeling quite bushed by evening. The somehow I got a second wind and worked into the evening.

Saturday – Girls on the Run 5k. My daughter completed her first 5k in some terrible weather!: Rainy, then snowy, blowing winds and puddles all over the place to avoid. I was so proud of McKenzie. She finished it up with no complaints! Her mom was then super tired and took a really long afternoon nap. = 40 minutes

TOTAL = 5 hours, not my best week

  • Swim = 1.5 hours
  • Bike = 0
  • Run = 1 hour, 40 minutes
  • Strength = 2 hours
